Seniors Getting Started

The following are the first-hand stories by seniors describing their experience in getting started in computing. Although not all experiences will be positive, it is hoped that these stories will encourage new senior computer users.

Kate
I first heard about the Computer Club about 6 years ago, and decided to join.

I was very nervous that first day, but everyone was so helpful that it made me feel at ease. Horst was wonderful, and helped me with the "mouse". I was terrified of this thing called "the mouse", but with lots of help and practice I soon mastered it. I thought if I can master that, I can learn anything!! I soon became "hooked", and the first thing I learned was how to send e-mails to my family in Australia. I was just thrilled, and so were all members of my family.

When Doug V started a class to teach us seniors how to make web pages, I thought it would be a good idea to make a family page to share my wonderful Australian family with others. Within the next year, with expert instruction and lots of patience from Doug, I had completed my first web pages. My family were delighted. One of my grandsons named me "Nanna.com".

Since then I have started new web pages, and also am working on a "Pictures and Music" CD. Sometimes I am also able to help other seniors with some of their Internet problems.

I have invariably found my computer training to be helpful with my other volunteer jobs at the Centre.

So I have a message for all of you seniors who are wondering whether or not you can do it. My message to you is this: "If I can do it, you can!" Sure there undoubtedly will be plenty of frustrations, but with perseverance, you will find the computer to be very useful in many ways. There are lots of good people at the Computer Club room, who are always able and willing to give you a hand.

A big "thank you" to all at the Computer Club for making this wonderful Club available to all seniors. I will always be grateful for all the help I have received from you all.

If you are a senior and have a story about getting started in computers and would like to share it with others, please send it via e-mail to courses@shaw.ca. (You can just click on the e-mail address to send the message.)
